Women Power DRC held a meeting on Tuesday, August 12, 2025, focused on positive masculinity to celebrate World Youth Day. The event brought together young people—both married and single—from various organizations. The goal was to brainstorm solutions to break down gender stereotypes and encourage men to play an active role in promoting equality and women’s well-being.
Field of Pain and House of Fear
Intertwined Stories from the Field
I am a mother of five children, living with my partner in the village of Buhumba. I only went through high school, yet life has already taught me more than books ever could.
A few months ago, in the pouring rain on a July evening in 2025, my life was turned upside down in a matter of moments. I was returning from the Rwanda market with a friend, laden with groceries for our small shop. Night had fallen, and the heavy, cold rain made every step more difficult. Alone, I found the courage to go to the hospital, fearing that telling my husband about the horror would destroy our home. In our community, a woman who has been raped is considered cursed, foolish, worthless. The mockery, the judgment, and sometimes the shame drive some to suicide.

mother of eight children. In May, another woman and I were plowing our fields to feed our families when two masked men appeared, sticks in hand. With our hearts pounding, we were ordered to hand over money. When we replied that we had nothing, the threats turned into violence.
They beat us and raped us, one after the other. The physical pain mingled with shame and the fear of what others might think. We didn’t seek medical help; we simply washed ourselves in silence, hoping to erase that night of terror. But the memory never fades. Our daily lives,...
